What is Stilbite?

A member of the Zeolite family, Stilbite forms as beautiful clusters within volcanic rock, usually developing alongside Apophyllite, Barite, Heulandite, and Prehnite. Most Stilbite is white, but it can also be found in shades of brown, pink, yellow, and orange. Although it was discovered by Jean-Claude Delamétherie in 1797, Stilbite was originally thought to be just another form of Heulandite. When German mineralogists realized that it was its own distinct crystal, they gave Stilbite the name “Desmine,” which is still used in German today. Eventually, René Just Haüy derived the name “Stilbite” from the Greek word, “stilbein,” which means “to shine or glitter.” Stilbite’s stunning pearl-like sheen belies its soft, compassionate energy.
