Root Chakra Meaning

Root Chakra (Muladhara in Sanskrit) is the first chakra, located at the base of our spine. The element of the Root Chakra is earth, which nurtures us and provides for our basic needs.

Root Chakra Purpose

Root Chakra is responsible for our survival instincts – its main purpose is to ensure that all our basic needs are fulfilled. Root chakra grounds us to the earth. If our Root Chakra is activated and healthy, we feel secure, stable and balanced. We are not anxious or concerned about our well-being and whether our emotional, physical or financial needs will be met. We feel a sense of belonging.

Root Chakra is the foundation of our health and vitality. A balanced Root Chakra protects us from any kind of disease, mental or physical. If the Root Chakra becomes imbalanced or blocked, disease can easily manifest in our body.

Living in a constant state of fear damages the Root Chakra. Therefore, instead of being afraid of something, a much more proactive approach would be trying to find a solution to whatever is causing us to feel fearful. If there is no clear solution, we could try to release the energy of fear by approaching the situation with humor.

What Color is the Root Chakra

Root Chakra is associated with the color red.

Root Chakra Healing

An unhealthy Root Chakra can generally be either passive or overactive. A passive Root Chakra causes anxiety, fear and phobias, exhaustion and lack of energy, self-doubt and low self-esteem. An overactive Root Chakra, on the other hand, causes outbursts of anger and greed, impatience and irritability, overworking and a rigid mindset.

One of the best ways to heal an imbalanced Root Chakra is to walk barefoot in nature. This grounds us and strengthens our connection to the earth, which is essential for a healthy Root Chakra. Another great way to heal the Root Chakra is to do some gardening or completing a DIY project. Dancing to the rhythm of tribal music (African drums or didgeridoo for instance) and eating foods with grounding properties, such as root vegetables, can also be beneficial.

Furthermore, meditating while holding Root Chakra crystals or stones in your hands helps to heal this chakra. While you are meditating, try to visualize yourself as a tree with strong and powerful roots going deep into the ground.
