April's Full Moon - The Pink Moon

Pink Moon

This year, April’s full moon, called the Pink Moon, will reach peak illumination at 2:55pm EDT on April 16th. However, it will still be big and beautiful when it becomes visible above the horizon after sunset.

2022’s Pink Moon is the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, and it celebrates all of the joy of the Earth’s rebirth.

What is the Pink Moon?

Is the Pink Moon really pink? Not exactly. The name comes from the proliferation of a pink wildfower, phlox subulata, which blooms all over eastern North America in the early spring. This flower is colloquially called creeping phlox, moss phlox, and, most relevant to us, moss pink.

Native American tribes have a whole host of colorful names for April’s full moon, including the Breaking Ice Moon (Alongquin), Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs (Tlingit), and Moon When the Ducks Come Back (Lakota).

In Anishinaabe tradition, the Pink Moon is the Sucker Moon. When the sucker fish come back to lakes and streams to spawn, Anishinaabe legend holds that they are actually returning from the spirit world to purify the water and all of its creatures.

This year, the Pink Moon is also critical to Judeo-Christian tradition. The first full moon of spring is used to determine the dates for Passover and Easter. The Jewish religious calendar is based on lunar cycles, and Passover begins in the middle of the month of Nisan, around the full moon. In Christian tradition, Jesus was betrayed at a Passover meal, and thus Easter is observed on the Sunday after the first full moon of spring.

Traditional gardening advice also posits that the Pink Moon is the perfect time to kill weeds, prune and thin your plants, mow, cut timber, and plant below-ground crops like potatoes, parsnips, and turnips.

What is the Spiritual Meaning of the Pink Moon?

The Pink Moon celebrates all of spring’s gifts. The planet has reawakened. Connect with the Earth, and you will see that right now, anything is possible!

The Pink Moon symbolizes rebirth and fertility but also rest. As we start a new quarter of the year, the Pink Moon encourages you to recharge and release anything that no longer serves you. If you are burnt out or struggling to juggle everything in your life, the Pink Moon invites you to strive for balance in all things. This year’s stabilizing energy is especially strong, because the Pink Moon occurs in Libra.
