Crystals for Samhain

Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “Sah-win”). Meaning “Summer’s End,” this holiday is still celebrated by modern pagans on October 31st, and it carries important spiritual reminders that everyone can benefit from. Samhain is the pagan New Year; it celebrates the cycle of life and death. In late October, fall is in its full glory, and winter is just around the corner. We are reaping the autumn harvest, but we are also planning what seeds we will sow next. Samhain gives thanks both for the past year and for the rebirth that we know will come with the spring. It is a time for closure, goal-setting, and gratitude. The veil between the spiritual and human worlds is at its thinnest at Samhain, allowing spirits to pass through. That’s why Halloween is associated with ghosts and the supernatural!

Samhain has four profound spiritual lessons: accepting the cycle of life and death, connecting with the spiritual realm, giving thanks for what we have received, and planning for the year ahead. There are many crystals that can support you as you explore Samhain’s meaning. Here are some of our favorites and some suggestions for simple rituals that can make the most of their powers!

Accepting Natural Cycles

  • Carnelian
  • Danburite
  • Hematite
  • Lepidolite
  • Morganite
  • Rhodonite
  • Rose Quartz
  • Unakite

Place your crystals around a white candle. As you light the candle, focus on the friends you have lost and whom you would like to honor. Keep that intention strong and gaze into the fire. Fire is cleansing, and it also has the ability to carry your messages to the spirit world. Take as much time as you would like to channel the crystals’ healing energies. You can close the ritual by blowing out the candle, or you can leave it burning (under supervision) as a gentle way to respect your lost loved ones.

Connecting with the Spiritual Realm

  • Amethyst
  • Angelite
  • Apophyllite
  • Celestite
  • Clear Quartz
  • Fishtail Selenite
  • Lapis Lazuli
  • Moonstone
  • Opalite

These crystals are perfect for psychic meditation. Find a calm, quiet space. If you’d like, set the mood with gentle music or nature sounds. You might also want to light some incense or diffuse essential oils to appeal to your sense of smell; cinnamon, frankincense, lemon, jasmine, sage, and sandalwood are great options to boost your practice’s psychic energy. When you are ready, lay down and place your crystal(s) of choice on your forehead. This position activates your Third Eye Chakra, which ties to your intuition and psychic abilities. You may also want to place a crystal on top of your head to open up your Crown Chakra, which accesses divine wisdom and communication. Concentrate on the crystals. Imagine their energy vibrating in waves, harmonizing your body with the spiritual realm. If any questions for your angels or spirit guides come to your mind, verbalize them. When you are ready to finish your meditation, gently wiggle your toes and fingers to bring you back to the physical world. Remove the crystals, and slowly come to a comfortable seated position. Take a deep breath to ground yourself, and return to your day with a new sense of spiritual awareness.

Giving Thanks

  • Amethyst
  • Apatite
  • Aventurine
  • Emerald
  • Kyanite
  • Rose Quartz
  • Rhodochrosite

One of the most effective ways to give thanks is a gratitude grid. Find something that can serve as your grid’s base, like a block of wood, a plate, or a piece of fabric. Arrange your crystals in a geometric formation on the base. When you place each crystal in the grid, hold it for a moment, and focus on your gratitude to charge the stone with your intent. You may want to incorporate a mantra or simply say, “I am thankful,” when charging the crystals. As you are creating your grid, listen to your intuition and consider the shapes that you find powerful and pleasing: circles, triangles, etc. You might consider placing Amethyst or Rose Quartz, since they are both members of the amplifying Quartz family, in the center of the grid to act as an anchor and broadcaster for the others. Display your grid in a communal space, such as the living room or the dining room, to promote gratitude throughout your entire household. Crystal grids make very eye-catching centerpieces!

  • Ametrine
  • Astrophyllite
  • Chrysanthemum Stone
  • Cinnabar
  • Citrine
  • Jade
  • Malachite
  • Pyrite
  • Ruby
  • Serpentine
  • Sunstone

Create an abundance jar to assist with your goal planning. To begin, get a small jar or bottle with a lid. Add your chosen crystal(s) to the jar with attractive herbs like bay leaves, basil, cinnamon, and ginger root. The crystals and the herbs increase each other’s powers. Replace the lid and light a green or white candle. Drip a few drops of candle wax on top of the jar to seal it. Keep your abundance jar on your desk, or make sure it’s nearby whenever you are goal-setting or planning for your career. You can charge your abundance jar in the sunlight or moonlight just like you would charge your crystals. There’s a rare Blue Moon on October 31st this year, so it’s a particularly powerful time to make or charge your abundance jar!

Because Samhain connects you with the spirit realm, you might also want a grounding stone to assist you. Hematite is our favorite option, because it balances your physical and spiritual selves and encourages you to trust in the divine plan, but Aragonite, Agate, Black Tourmaline, and Jet are also great grounding crystals!
