Candle Magic: DIY Your Own Crystal Candle

If you love lighting a candle to relax, you’re not alone! For centuries, candles have been powerful tools for intention setting and magic, and you can harness that power for yourself. Try this tutorial to create your own powerful crystal candle—but first, let’s explore how candle magic works.

The Basics of Candle Magic

Candles send intentions out into the universe. Candles are such powerful tools because they encompass all five elements: fire (the flame), air (feeding the flame), water (melted wax), solid wax (earth), and spirit (your intention).

When you burn a candle, you open a gateway between the physical and spiritual worlds, allowing the universe to clearly hear your intent and act upon it. Begin by clarifying your desires into a direct, simple sentence, such as, “I am not afraid to set boundaries.”

Once you have a strong intent, you can charge the candle with your intent in a variety of ways:

  • Speak your intention out loud three times while focusing on the candle.
  • Hold the candle and meditate on your intention.
  • Carve your intention into the candlewax with a toothpick or paring knife. You can use the most important word, a symbol, or a sigil to represent your overall intent.
  • Write your intent on a scrap of paper and place it in front of the candle.

Candles also have strong color correspondences, so it is worth paying careful attention to which color you select when making (or buying) your candle. You can also use these color correspondences, in combination with your intent, to select a crystal to use with your candle.

Color Meanings Suggested Crystals
White all-purpose substitute for any color knowledge truth Selenite, Clear Quartz
Red energy love courage Ruby, Red Jasper
Pink self-love kindness beauty Rose Quartz, Morganite
Yellow inspiration action happiness Citrine, Bumblebee Jasper
Orange confidence vitality adaptability Carnelian, Orange Calcite
Green abundance health fertility Jade, Green Aventurine
Blue emotional intelligence wisdom calm Aquamarine, Lapis Lazuli
Purple psychic abilities spirituality power Amethyst, Iolite
Black protection boundaries release Shungite, Obsidian
Brown grounding motivation balance Bronzite, Brown Tourmaline

When you are ready, find a safe space and light your candle. If possible, let the candle burn fully. However, if you have to leave your space, snuff out the candle, and be sure to thank it for its help.

How to Make Your Own Crystal Candle

Now that you understand the basics of candle magic and how to combine them with crystals, it’s time to make your own DIY crystal candle.

You will need:

  • Your crystals of choice
  • A glass or tin container for your candle
  • Candle wicks
  • 5 oz soy wax or beeswax
  • Double boiler
  • Wax adhesive (or hot glue)
  • Scissors
  • Wax dye or crayons for color (optional)
  • Essential oils for scent (optional)
  • 1.Attach the wick(s) to your candle container with wax adhesive or hot glue.
  • 2.Melt the wax in a double boiler.
  • 3.If you are coloring your candle, add wax dye or crayons when the wax is melted. Stir to combine.
  • 4.If you are using essential oils, add them to the wax and stir to combine.
  • 5.Pour the wax into the container, leaving approximately a quarter inch of space at the top for your crystals.
  • 6.Allow the candle to cool until the wax is mostly solid and slightly warm to the touch. Then, gently press the crystals into the top of the wax.
  • 7.Let the candle fully cool.
  • 8.Trim the wick, light, and enjoy!

What magic will you make with your crystal candle?

How to Set and Achieve Goals

Having a goal is great, but how many goals have you achieved? There’s a lot of hard work and determination between wanting something and getting in, and crystals can help guide you along that path.

How to Choose a Goal

Achieving a goal starts with setting a goal. For many people, this point is where the trouble starts! If you have a clear, specific intention, you’re more likely to make that intention a reality. Saying “I want to save more money” is not as effective as saying “I will put $25 into my savings account every week.”

When you’re thinking about setting a goal, use the acronym SMART:

  • Specific: know exactly what you want to achieve
  • Measurable: know how you are going to measure your success
  • Achievable: be realistic about what you can do
  • Relevant: make sure this goal aligns with your larger plans
  • Time-bound: set a deadline for yourself to make sure you do it

Once you settle on your SMART goal, you’re ready to complete a goal-setting ritual.

A Goal-Setting Ritual

This ritual is particularly powerful on a New Moon (the next one is September 14th), which is the perfect time for intention-setting, but you can perform it any time you are ready to start working toward your goal.

For this ritual you will need:

  • A small white candle, such as a tealight or birthday candle
  • A piece of paper and a writing utensil
  • Your goal-setting crystal of choice (we’ll give our recommendations at the end of the article)
  • A place with dirt, either outside in your yard or in a gardening pot

To begin, write your goal down on the piece of paper. Then, place your candle on top of the paper. If your candle doesn’t already have a built-in container to catch wax and prevent the flame from spreading, be sure to place a dish underneath it.

Place your crystal of choice in front of the candle. Then, take a few deep breaths to center yourself, all while focusing on your goal.

When you feel grounded, state your goal out loud and light the candle. Focus on your crystal while the candle burns, reflecting on your goal and how you will achieve it. If possible, let the candle burn out completely (but never leave an open flame unattended!)

To close the ritual, thank your supplies and the universe. Then, take the piece of paper with your goal written on it and bury it in the dirt, either outside or in a gardening pot.

Take the crystal from the ritual and place it somewhere where it can serve as a reminder of your goals, such as your desk or bedroom.

Achieving a goal doesn’t stop with formally setting it. Check in on your progress at least once a week by working with your ritual crystal.

Mindfulness 101

Did you know that September 12th is National Mindfulness Day? You may have heard the term “mindfulness” thrown around, but what does it really mean? And how can you use crystals to enhance a mindfulness practice?

What is Mindfulness?

Simply put, mindfulness is living in the moment. By remaining aware of even the most minute details of our environment, thoughts, emotions, and senses, you are able to achieve a greater feeling of peace. Mindfulness is not about judging; it is about approaching your surroundings with a spirit of curiosity and acceptance.

Research by the American Psychological Association has shown that mindfulness leads to reduced stress, increased focus, better emotional regulation, and higher levels of satisfaction.

To get a better understanding of what mindfulness means, try this simple exercise. Pick a comfy chair and sit down. Then, do a quick body scan. Start by paying attention to your toes, then your feet, your ankles, etc. until you reach the very top of your head. What sensations do you notice? Remember, don’t judge them; simply observe them.

Then, expand your awareness to your environment. How does the chair feel underneath you? What is the temperature like in the room? Do you hear anything? Smell anything? Notice the objects around you, simply acknowledging their presence.

Then, finish the exercise with another quick body scan. Do you feel different?

Your mindfulness practice doesn’t have to be a complete body and environment scan, however. Sometimes, it can be as simple as taking a moment to pause in between each sip of your morning coffee or acknowledging every product in your skincare routine as you use it.

As we’ve said, mindfulness is a practice. It is about finding moments of mindfulness every day, even if you can only devote a minute. However, for the best results, we recommend making mindfulness a part of your daily routine.

You can fold a lot of fun hobbies into a mindfulness practice, including:

  • Art
  • Meditation
  • Nature walks
  • Yoga
  • Cooking
  • Tai Chi
  • Listening to music

How to Use Mindfulness Crystals

There are a so many ways that you can incorporate crystals into your mindfulness practice.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • Hold or place a crystal over a Chakra during body scans and/or mindfulness meditation.
  • Create a crystal grid, focusing on the tactile experience to promote mindfulness.
  • Bring a crystal with you on nature walks.
  • Focus on a crystal and observe it as a mindfulness activity.
  • Leave a crystal on your desk while doing art therapy or in the kitchen while cooking.
  • If you have a space dedicated to your mindfulness practice, decorate it with mindfulness crystals.

When you look for a mindfulness crystal, you want to consider stones that promote calm, clarity, and focus. We recommend:

Amethyst is an extremely balancing crystal. It helps you release negativity and bad habits, which in turn supports your mindfulness practice. Amethyst also resonates strongly with the Third Eye and Crown Chakras, allowing you to access your highest self as you establish your mindfulness practice.

Reading Crystals

No matter what you’re reading, having a crystal on hand can help. We recommend creating a dedicated reading nook and placing a crystal there. You can even attach a crystal to your bookmark!

Charoite engages your mind, which make it the perfect pairing for non-fiction. This crystal will help you understand complex concepts, retain the information you learn, and connect with the real people and events that you are reading out.

So next time you reach for a book, grab a crystal, too, and see what you can discover!

Abundance, Bridges, and Even More Crystal Formations

This month, we’re continuing our series on special crystal formations with four more unique, naturally occurring shapes: abundance, bridges, enhydros, and record keepers.

Abundance

An abundance crystal is a “mother” crystal surrounded by other, smaller crystals at its base. Abundance crystals represent prosperity, showing you how much is within your reach. They encourage you to chase your dreams but also to count your blessings. Abundance crystals help you work through the limits you place on yourself so that you can claim the life you deserve. They also raise your frequency, revealing your highest self and replenishing your spiritual energy.

Bridge

A bridge crystal occurs when a small crystal forms part in and part out of a larger crystal. As its name implies, a bridge crystal teaches you how to “bridge the gap.” If you feel like something is missing in your life, bridge crystals reveal your true needs and help you meet them. Bridge crystals are also especially useful if you are struggling with a serious problem, complicated decision, or interpersonal conflict. The longer you work with a bridge crystal, you become more self-aware and a better communicator.

Enhydro

An enhydro is a rare crystal that has water trapped in it; because crystals take so long to form, that water could be thousands or even millions of years old. Enhydro crystals store ancient wisdom, and they vibrate at a very high frequency. Use enhydros as an ally for your most difficult spiritual, emotional, and mental work; they will teach you to adapt and transform. Because of their water content, enhydros are also very powerful cleansers, and they promote empathy and compassion. Enhydros are most common in varieties of Agate, Quartz, Selenite, and Aquamarine.

Record Keeper

Record keeper crystals are crystal points that have one or more triangles on their faces. These triangles may be raised or sunken; they are not often immediately visible and may take some careful contemplation to be discovered. Record keeper crystals form when mineral-rich waters flow over a crystal point, and they are most commonly found in Clear Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Ruby, and Sapphire. A record keeper’s triangles store information from ancient societies and past lives. If you feel a particular pull to a record keeper, it is because it has knowledge to share with you. Record keepers are powerful psychic tools, activating your Third Eye and Crown Chakras and improving skills like meditation, divination, clairvoyance, and clairaudience.
